Burnie is a town located on the North-West Coast of Tasmania is an RV-friendly town, offering free overnight stays for fully self-contained vehicles just a few minutes from the Burnie City Centre at Cooee on the site of an old abattoir. Burnie is a large, modern city with full facilities and serves as a great base to explore both the North-West Coast and also inland regions. As at the 2011 Australian Census Burnie had an urban population of almost 20,000 people making it the fourth largest city in Tasmania. Burnie, together with the nearby coastal town of Wynyard, together have an estimated urban population of almost 30,000 permanent residents. This free overnight stop is not the most attractive of a number of RV-friendly towns in Tasmania, but is large and does have a dump point.

The Burnie City Council provides a short-stay free camping opportunity for fully self-contained vehicles at Cooee Point (located app. 2.5km west of the Burnie town centre) to allow travellers an opportunity to explore Burnie and its surrounds and to avail themselves of the city’s core services prior to continuing their travels.

You must have a fully self-contained motorhome, campervan or caravan to stay at this location – this is a vehicle which carries its own water supply, contains internal washing and toilet facilities, and has an onboard wastewater storage tank. A vehicle is deemed to satisfy the requirement to be a fully self-contained vehicle if it is accredited by the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia under its Self Contained Vehicles Policy of 2016, and displays a current SCV panel issued by the CMCA. You must have a valid permit to stay at this location – Council inspectors patrol the area. A permit is valid Until 1 October for a maximum period of 5 – consecutive nights. A Permit will not be extended or renewed. A new permit will not be issued for a further period within 7 days from the day on which the first Permit expires. From 1 October, for a maximum period of 2 – consecutive nights. A maximum of two permits will be issued for a vehicle in any one calendar year. A Permit will not be extended or renewed. A permit must be displayed on the windscreen or on the exterior of the vehicle at all times a vehicle is on the camping site.

How to obtain a Permit

A Permit must be obtained from the Burnie City Council offices at 80 Wilson Street, Burnie or from the Visitors Information Centre, Makers’ Workshop, West Park prior to occupying the site.
