Strahan is a very popular tourist location on the West Coast of Tasmania, and home to the Gordon River Cruise. Visitors to Strahan in fully self-contained recreational vehicles can stay at the Strahan Golf Club, Meredith Street. Sites are $10 per vehicle per night and stays are limited to 7 days. You will find a dump point in Harvey Street, and potable water can be obtained from the Esplanade, next to the toilet block in the big car park in the centre of Strahan near the Strahan Wharf. Strahan is one of the most popular places to visit in Tasmania. Strahan is a small fishing and tourism town and former major port on the west-coast of Tasmania. Strahan is located some 300 kilometres west of Hobart and 40 kilometres from Queenstown, on the edge of the Macquarie Harbour. Strahan is part of the Tasmanian World Heritage Area, and that received global news as the base for the environmental campaign to save the Franklin River. Strahan was originally developed as a port of access for mining settlements in the area; however, it also became a vital location for the timber industry after the discovery Huon Pine. This timber is a fine-grained wood ideal for ship and furniture building. There are many popular tourism attractions in the area. The Gordon River Cruise is very popular and explores Macquarie Harbour and the Lower Gordon River. A short drive out of Strahan is spectacular Ocean Beach, a very long sandy beach with views of the Southern Ocean. A  steam railway journey from Queenstown to Strahan is recommended and takes you through dense rainforest and alongside beautiful rivers.
